Ein Proxy-Server ermöglicht es mehreren Usern im LAN eine einzige Wählverbindung und damit einen einzigen Account beim Service-Provider zu nutzen.
Ausserdem bieten Proxy-Server zusätzliche Sicherheitsfunktionen, wie sie auch als sog. Firewalls realisiert werden.
